DRM - Encryption & Licensing Services

LIVE Streaming DRM/Encryption

Webcastia offers DRM (Digital Rights Management) that has encryption and allows you to configure how the viewing license is issued. For example, you could issue viewing licenses that allows viewing on a single computer, for a period of 30 days, with a maximum viewing of 25 times within the 30 day period. We use the Microsoft DRM protocol, which is the best and most proven DRM product on the market.

Viewing licenses are valid for a maximum of one year.

MAC Access for Live Events: We use the Microsoft Digital Right Management technology (the industry standard) for protecting your content against illegal distribution. At this time, Microsoft and Apple have not provided an interface with the latest version of the DRM, so MAC access is not available.

The best solution is providing cross-platform distribution of protected content, is to offer Microsoft DRM content to Windows users (92% of USA PC users) and a flash protection solution (not DRM and it can be illegally distributed) for MAC users (8% of USA PC users). This would require two encoding sessions from the live event (Microsoft and Flash).

On-Demand DRM/Encryption

We encode your content using the Microsoft DRM technology and stream the content using the Microsoft Silverlight service & player, allowing for cross-platform (ie pc and mac) distribution.

DRM Technology Update Version: 10/2009

Webcastia owns a DRM license through the Microsoft Corporation. We develop our own DRM system, using this technology, with our own DRM servers.

Currently, the only proven DRM application for live events is using the Microsoft DRM system. The Mircosoft Silverlight DRM system has not established a live component yet, and Adobe (flash) will not have a live component until sometime next year. We do not reccommend using a third-party DRM solution for flash, why? we should all leave the encryption technology to the actual software developers of the streaming providers (ie Microsoft and Adobe).

Until Silverlight and Adobe release a proven live DRM component, we use the Microsoft DRM encoding solution that can be streamed through the Silverlight DRM system, allowing for cross-platform distribution.

It's important to understand, that PPV gateways are not DRM gateways. PPV and DRM are not the same products. The most important component of a DRM service is encryption, the most important component of PPV is issuing tickets or passes, collecting money and authenticating such tickets at event time along with ticket use security.
