DRM 101

Webcastia has developed a live webcasting Digial Rights Management system, using the Microsoft DRM technology, that provides encryption to live streams and on-demand files, and allows you to assign and control viewing license parameters. Many other content providers claim Protection, protection that does not include encryption. DRM is essential to protecting your content against illegal distribution.

Encoding from the Venue

The live event is encoded, using the Microsoft Media Encoder, up to the streaming server. The encoded stream is encryped with the Webcastia DRM profile. Each time a person attempts to access the live stream (file if on-demand), they are routed to the Webcastia DRM servers for authentication. Basically, DRM is encryption with authentication of the actual stream or file.

Authentication

As viewers request to watch the stream (or on-demand file), the viewer is routed to our DRM servers by the Microsoft Media Player. The stream/file's identification data is send to the DRM server and the viewer is asked to provide their Access Code to watch the event. Then, our DRM servers authenticate the viewer and stream/file, then send a license to the computer requesting access. The Media Player stores the license parameters on the computer and grants the viewer licensed content.

Controlling Access via the License

License parameters are stored on the Webcastia DRM servers, and issued as viewers request to watch the content. Parameters that you can use to control access for a license are as follows;

1. Number of computers that can view the content (default is 1)
2. Length of the license (days)
3. Number of views during the length of the license

MAC viewing: again, the Microsoft Media Player must be used to view our DRM streams. Windows and Apple have not developed an interface to the latest version of the DRM technology. MAC access is not supported. The current fix: To install XP on your Mac and use the Microsoft Media Player. We do not offer Silverlight DRM at this time, for that DRM product does not handle live streams.

Unlike most other DRM service providers, we are able to assign your own DRM profile, that allows you to take over DRM authentication at a later time. Usually, if you wish to end your relationship with your DRM service provider, you lose the ability to access the stream and you would be required to re-encode it with the new DRM profile. This service is provided upon request.
